AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- There may be new roadblocks in the effort to balance the state's medicaid budget.
Democrats on the legislature's Appropriations Committee say they've received letters from the federal agency that manages the medicaid program, saying some of the...more Governor's proposed cuts would violate federal law.
The letters from the federal center for medicaid services (cms) say three proposed cuts would violate a federal requirement called "maintenance of effort". Earlier this year, the Governor said he had been assured by the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services that Maine could get a waiver to allow the cuts.
Democrats in the legislature say the administration should drop those cuts now and develop alternative ways to fill the $220-million budget gap. AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A formal investigation into an ambulance crews treatment of an injured skier, who later died, is being done at the request of the skier's widow.
Dana Morse said in newspaper article the ambulance crew that treated her husband David did not provide him...more with proper care and left her on the side of the road en route to the hospital. She then forwarded her concerns to Maine Emergency Medical Services which is now investigating her claims.
The head of Maine EMS has spent the past couple of weeks reviewing Dana Morse's claims and now he's heading up a formal investigation into the actions of that North Star ambulance crew. By conducting a formal investigation Maine EMS can subpoena records and witnesses. The agency is being assisted in the probe by a detective from the Maine Attorney General's Office.

KITTERY, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Supporters of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery say they are ready to fight to save the installation if another base closure process gets underway.
The nation's oldest continuous- operating shipyard dodged a bullet nearly seven years ago after it was...more placed on a list for closure.
The Department of Defense plans to ask congress to authorize another round of base closures in 2013 and again in 2015. Retired shipyard commander William McDonough serves on the Seacoast Shipyard Association. He says the organization is ready to gear up for another campaign to keep the base open.
He says the shipyard is in a better position than 2005 with less shipyards to compete against. Plus the shipyard's record of completing projects ahead of schedule.
'The Department of Defense has said carriers and submarines are vital, our product is good it is not going to go away and enough of them to keep the work going,' said McDonough.
